According to Partners for Families Director Brian Akamine, the organization anticipated feeding more than 250 families. More than 28 turkeys with all the trimmings — were donated by ShopRite and Giant Foods, and prepared by students in the culinary arts program at the Central Montgomery County Vo-Technical Center in Norristown and in conjunction with Montgomery County Human Services cafeteria services assisting with refrigeration and food prep on the day of the dinner, Akamine stated in an e-mail.

O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing!

The words of this great hymn of the faith go like this:

O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace!

My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the earth abroad the honors of thy name.

Jesus! the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease; 'tis music in the sinner's ears, 'tis life, and health, and peace.

He breaks the power of canceled sin, he sets the prisoner free; his blood can make the foulest clean; his blood availed for me.

--------------------------------------------

It was a gorgeous, sunny, fall afternoon on Broad Street in downtown Philadelphia. My 2 year old son Luke was sitting on my shoulders gazing up and down the street, entranced and encircled by the great throng of people, thousands more than he has ever seen at one time or place. I gazed into the northern sky to see the proud statue of William Penn, which adorned the apex of City Hall. Was it me or did he seem to be standing a little taller today?

Off in the distance I could hear the crowd’s excited chatter swiftly unify into a deafening roar that spread like a tidal wave over all who were there. Shredded office paper began to rain down from the crowded windows of the skyscrapers above, as the 2008 world champion Philadelphia Phillies rounded the corner along the route that would parade them past hundreds of thousands of frenzied fans on their way to Citizens Bank Park, where they had won the World Series two nights earlier.

The sound of thousands of tongues joined together in praise of the Phillies was an amazing thing to behold. And as a die-hard, championship-starved Philadelphia sports fan, I couldn’t help but get caught up in the moment. At the same time, as a die-hard, Jesus following Christian, I couldn’t help but feel a nagging sense of sadness as I caught bits and pieces of the conversations of adjacent Phillies fans. Most were some sort of variation of, “This is the best day of my life!” or, “now I can die in peace.” For them, a World Series Championship was as good as it gets. And as good as it was in one sense, it doesn’t even come close to the surpassing greatness of knowing Jesus Christ, my Lord.

I believe that is what Charles Wesley was trying to capture as he penned the words to this hymn. His soul was so captured by the Son of God, so full of praise waiting to burst out, that he could only describe it by wishing for more than just one single, solitary tongue to praise Him with. In fact, anything less than a thousand tongues would simply not be enough to give voice to the overflow of his heart.

Wesley loved the name of Jesus. Its very mention was music to his ears. He knew the power that was in the name – power to heal and forgive; to chase our fears away and give us peace; power to work miracles, not the least of which is the transformation of a dead heart that is hostile to God into one that is full of life and worships Him.

While we may never be given a thousand tongues to worship Jesus with, we do have one, and so let’s not fail to let it be full of praise for the name that is higher than every name. And one day we will be among not thousands, but millions, all gathered together for the Parade of all parades, given in honor of Him who gave his life for us by dying on a cross to pay the penalty for our sins and take away the wrath of God that was upon us. We will sing, along with, “every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: ‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!’ (Rev 5:13)”

Pastor JR endorses: Junky Car Club

Well, I did something that I never thought I'd do - I joined a car-club. But this car club is different. It's about living with less so we can give more.

The club is called: http://www.junkycarclub.com/

The Junky Car Club was established in the spring of 2006 when Mike Foster decided to sell his fully loaded Infiniti G35 sports car to drive a junky 1993 Toyota Camry. As an act of rebellion against consumerism and with the desire to give more to worthy causes, Mike began to enlist his friends and associates to join him in this experiment of driving with less and giving more.

I'm a member (I'm driving a 2000 jeep with 160,000 miles on it)! How about you?

Check it out at: http://www.junkycarclub.com/

The question...

By: Al Whittaker.

It happened again the other day. “The question” came up. The one I never seem to have a satisfactory response to. It came from someone with good intentions – someone who really cares about our church. You know the question. You’ve probably asked it yourself. Sometimes I think I’m the only person at Storehouse who hasn’t asked it. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve spent plenty of time hashing it over. I’ve beaten that horse a few times.
You never know when it’s going to come up. Sometimes it’s over snacks at House Church. Sometimes it’s in the middle of unloading the truck early on a Sunday morning. Sometimes it’s in a phone conversation with someone that’s relatively new to the church. Sometimes it’s at a conference with a group of leaders. It even comes up at our staff meetings every few weeks – and it usually ends up consuming a couple of hours.
“When are we going to have our own building?”
I think I know the answer, but I have decided I am not going to try to give it anymore. I never seem to have a satisfactory response anyway. From now on, I am just going to answer with more questions: Why do you think we need a building? How much do you think it will cost? Where do you think it should be? How big do you think it should be? What do you think the benefit will be? What will we be able to do then that we can’t do now? Consider yourself warned … if you ask me “the question,” I’m firing back.
Usually, when I hear it I get the feeling that maybe we’re not a “real” church. That we haven’t really arrived. Or that we need to “grow up.” Often, it seems to come with a bit of sympathy and an expectation that I will want to commiserate about our situation. I don’t. You see, I don’t think of it as a liability. I think of it as an opportunity.
“But think about all that work we won’t have to do?” they say. What work? Oh, you mean loading and unloading the truck, and setting things up every week. Yeah, you’re right. It is work. But guess what? Buildings come with work, too. Like cleaning bathrooms, taking out the trash, cleaning carpets and cutting grass. And they come with expenses, too. Like leaky roofs, broken air conditioners, clogged sewer lines, light bulbs and toilet paper. Oh, and they sit empty most of the week.
And here’s another piece of news for you – we’re not the only church in America doing this. As a matter of fact, there seems to be a cottage industry of companies springing up doing nothing but servicing “portable churches.” One company alone claims to have served over 1,200 churches, and most of them are meeting in rented school facilities. (Incidentally, according to their marketing materials some churches are spending five to six hours setting up every week. We set up in just over an hour!)
I recently read an article from Relevant Magazine titled “What if church was meant to be something entirely different than what it looks like today?” It asked “Could it be that we have lost the concept of what it means to be the church rather than go to church?” And it said “if you look at the word ‘church’ in the Bible, it’s interesting that it is never used to describe a building or an organization. The word ‘church’ is always used to refer to a gathering, crowd, group, or an assembly of people who believed in this Messiah Jesus. It was a deep-seated community with a purpose.”
Wow. No building required? Maybe we’re onto something here.

BTW, a recent estimate indicated that a building would cost us somewhere around $7 million. At our current rate of growth we would outgrow it before we got it built and on the very first Sunday would have to have two services. And then I would have to get up even earlier … and those who know me know that I don’t like mornings. Now that I will commiserate over.

Just in time

Is God not working fast enough for you? Have you been saying the same prayer over and over for days, months, maybe years? Maybe God is working on it in His time.

Steph met Bill at work. She asked him to church, in which he responded with laughter. While most of us might have been deterred, Steph continued to ask him. This was last August-2007. Finally a few months later Bill agreed to come to church with Steph. A few months after that they start praying together. Then Bill decided to come to house church with her. In the spring of this year, he accepted Christ. In August he was baptized.

Steph writes, "My favorite definitions of worship has always been 'worship is whatever you do to tell God that he's worth it and worth all of it, all the time.' God is awesome and powerful and has the ability to change someone's life faster than I would have expected he could."

God is good, all the time. All the time, God is good.

Jesus, Who's that?

While getting a haircut today I struck up a conversation with the stylist (are they still called stylists when it's Supercuts?). I've had my haircut at this location several times but I had never seen her so I assume she was new. She was making the typical haircut small talk (how bout this weather, did you have a nice weekend, etc). Then she asked me what I do for a living. This question is always a weird one for me. Telling her I am the Associate Minister of Community Life doesn't really do much for most people so I usually simplify it and say, "I'm a pastor".

She responded by saying, "what's that?" I was confused so I repeated it, then said minister. She said, what's that? I'm thinking to myself, where is this lady from?! Then I said Priest, bingo! That's when the confusion really began. She couldn't understand why I don't live at the church. If we meet in a school, how are we a church? What kind of church are you?

It struck me that understanding me and our church probably isn't all that this woman is missing. I wonder if I mentioned grace or salvation or the Cross, if she would understand those things. I take for granted that I have so many Christian friends and live in this comfortable Christian bubble. I often forget how many people still don't know who Jesus is, how many don't understand His love for them, and how many have yet to recieve God's grace. Right here in our own neighborhoods. We need to make His name known!

Prayer Guide

STOREHOUSE CHURCH PRAYER GUIDE
Friday Morning, Sept 26 -thru- Saturday, Evening, Sept 27

FRIDAY MORNING:
Pray that we realize that our inheritance and hope as a church family is in God’s incomparable and incredible great power which is available to us (Gal. 1:12; Eph. 1:18-19; Phil. 3:10).

FRIDAY AFTERNOON:
Pray that our Church, Leadership and Pastoral Staff becomes more surrendered and poured out to Christ, so they can have spiritual breakthroughs by seeking the fear of God and the mind of Christ and the Spirit’s leading (1 Cor. 2:16; Gal. 2:20-21).

FRIDAY EVENING:
Pray for discernment in exposing any plans of the enemy against our Church. Ask Christ to protect us as we wage spiritual warfare against the enemy on behalf of others (Eph. 6:11-12, 16; Col. 2:6-8; 1 Pet. 3:12).

SATURDAY MORNING:
Pray for an increase of vitality, renewal and vision that is from God for us personally and collectively so that the church can be galvanized, then take a hold of, and then be revitalized as a committed community for His Kingdom and purpose.
(Isa. 61:3; Rom. 12).

SATURDAY AFTERNOON:
Pray against gossip, negative criticism, false expectations, unhealthy burdens, strife and weariness that will seek to invade our church family (Psalm 91:5-6, 11; Luke 10:19; Eph. 4: 17, 32-5:1).

SATURDAY EVENING
Pray that our church be a community of grace and forgiveness. That our church has an atmosphere of encouragement by being grateful for Christ’s work in us that enables us to be inspired to give genuine hospitality to all who come though our doors (Rom. 15:4-6; 2 Thess. 2:16-17).

You will be hearing more about this in the future... stay tuned...

New Addition to Storehouse Worship Team- Micah Clarke

In recent weeks you may have seen a new face added to the Storehouse Worship Team, singer and guitarist Micah Clarke. Micah and his wife Rachael have been attending Storehouse since May 2007, and while he's new to the team, he's no stranger to singing for those who'll listen.

Micah's parents, both worship leaders for 15 years, instilled a love and appreciation of music early on. "I was singing with my parents a lot growing up," he says. "We would sing songs that my parents wrote together, worship songs, and just classics like the Beatles and James Taylor."

In addition to singing, Micah's dad taught him to play guitar at age 14, and by age 15 he was writing and playing his own music. "Once I learned to play guitar fairly well it was easy to put words to the music I was writing. It came pretty naturally to me. I just wrote about what was going on in my life at the time," he says.

Over the years, Micah has sang for his hometown church, played with high school and college bands, pursued a solo career in Philadelphia, and all the while has progressed in his song writing themes and abilities.

"The type of music I write is reflective of life, its challenges as well as its blessings. I've always felt that God has been at the center of my music; however," he says, "writing for God, to Praise God has taken my writing and passion for writing to an all new level."

Micah now also takes that passion to the Storehouse stage, and he feels blessed to be a part of the team and to serve the church in this way.

You can check out Micah's original music at www.myspace.com/micahclarke, or at an upcoming show, and be sure to say hi—he's a friendly guy.

Infinite Grace: Women of Faith Conference 2008

Friday, September 12th through Saturday, September 13th, women met from around the greater northeast to attend this year's Women of Faith Conference, themed "Infinite Grace," at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia.

Since 1996, the Women of Faith Association (founded by Stephen Artburn) has been hosting conferences around the country, and each year its speakers have brought with them poignant—and often hilarious—stories, life lessons, and womanly advice.

This year's featured speakers in Philadelphia included Patsy Clairmont, Sandi Patty, Nicole C. Mullen, and Sheila Walsh, and all of the women were equally as dynamic as their messages. Common among all of them was one particular message: God loves you just as you are. They also reminded women that it's okay to be grumpy, we all secretly raid the fridge, and no woman can complete every task on her dozens of Post-It notes.

Highlights included dramatic skits by Nicole Johnson, songs and symbolic dances by Nicole C. Mullen and her students, and humorous words of wisdom by the spunky Luci Swindoll and Patsy Clairmont.

Tickets for next year's conference, "Grand New Day," are already available, and they're going fast. To find out more information about Women of Faith and current and future conferences, go to www.womenoffaith.com.

House Church Profile: Oreland

While September nudges beach gear back in the closet and the kids off to school, it's also the kick-off month for Storehouse-goers to return (or start going) to a house church.

Several new house churches are in effect this year, including the Oreland House Church led by Luke and Erin Amann and Art and Kathy Caruso.

The Amanns are no strangers to Storehouse; Luke has often served on the Operations Team and Erin has added her beautiful voice to the Worship Team on many occasions. The pair will now serve together as co-leaders of the Oreland House Church, and they will soon be joined by their first child, due this fall.

The Carusos have been members of Storehouse since 2004, and you can often spot them with their two young boys, Nicholas and Matthew. In addition to Art being a Leadership Council member and Kathy planning events with the Family Ministry, they will now also open their home to host Oreland House Church. Maya, their affectionate Border Collie, will welcome you too. On-site childcare will be provided.

House churches are often called the heart of Storehouse Church, and they allow attendants to grow closer in community as they spend time in worship and prayer. To see which one you'd like to join, go to http://storehousechurch.com/?grow=house_churches.
